The Reef-World Foundation – the international coordinator of the UN Environment Programme’s Green Fins initiative – is returning to ADEX Singapore this weekend (12-14 April 2024) by popular demand with two Sustainable Diving events – ‘The Sustainable Diving Think Tank’ and ‘The Sustainable Diving Dialogue’.

The charity will also be presenting its Green Fins Award to the watersports operator recognised to have the lowest environmental impact.

Reef-World says that the Sustainable Diving events ‘aim to break down the barriers for positioning the environment at the heart of the diving industry to protect the very asset upon which our industry depends.’ The two events are free and cater to all aspects of the dive community, from dive professionals to tour operators, resorts, training agencies and equipment manufacturers.

Reef-World first hosted the events, designed to provide attendees with connections and insights into sustainability trends within the industry, at ADEX Singapore in 2017. This year’s events will focus on taking action for coral bleaching recovery, following warnings that a global mass coral bleaching event may unfold this year. The team will share actions that both individuals and businesses can take to protect and help build resilient reefs.

The Sustainable Diving Think Tank is a private workshop for staff, dive guides, instructors, operations managers and business owners to exchange valuable insights and brainstorm solutions for best environmental practices and sustainable business models.

This workshop is chaired by The Reef-World Foundation and the UN Environment Programme, hosted by UW360, and will take place from 12:30–2:00 PM on Friday, 12 April 2024 at the Image / Film / Book Festival Stage.

Discussions will build on key areas identified during previous events: driving fundamental change in the way the industry operates, and what tools are required to increase the visibility and promotion of sustainability.

Places for the Think Tank workshop are limited, places can be booked in advance on Eventbrite

Sustainable Diving Dialogue

The Sustainable Diving Dialogue is a public Q&A which will take place from 12.30-1.30 PM on Sunday, 14 April 2024 on the Underwater360 Main Stage at ADEX. Attendees will hear from a panel of industry leaders in sustainability representing dive centres, liveaboards, manufacturers, media, training agencies and manufacturers.

The Dialogue will be chaired by the UN Environment Programme, organised by Reef-World and hosted by UW360.

Chloe Harvey, Executive Director at The Reef-World Foundation, said: ‘We have seen significant improvements in the way the marine tourism industry operates as a result of these events at ADEX over the years. It’s a great way for business leaders, divers, and holidaymakers to network, connect and join forces to overcome some of the hurdles they meet when trying to align their businesses with sustainability. It’s a pleasure to come together with UNEP, and work with the UW360 team, to deliver these events to the ADEX community once again.’
