As summer approaches, our seasonal roster of things to do expands to include some much-needed water activities—including at one particular Downtown L.A. hotel that’s miles from the ocean.
“Traditional” summer activities include beach days, beautiful hikes and bike rides but if you’re looking for something a bit more creative, you might want to consider scuba diving classes at Hotel Figueroa, where master diver and scuba expert Beth Beltramo will lead a Tuesday evening course specifically tailored to beginners.
From May 21 through September 24, folks who sign up for the $199 course will learn basic skills, like how to become weightless, the proper use of gear and other basic skills and safety rules, according to the course description.
Participating groups are capped at eight people and the lessons take place at the hotel’s own pool. Tickets, which can be booked right here, include all necessary equipment—except for your bathing suit, of course.
After what is sure to be an intense work out, consider indulging your hunger pang at Bar Magnolia, the hotel’s lobby restaurant offering small plates and expertly crafted cocktails all night long. Given the fact that plenty of travelers pass through or originate from L.A. before boarding a flight to the tropics—from Fiji to Hawaii and more—it only makes sense for local businesses to invest in the sort of educational courses that will allow residents to enjoy their time abroad (or even locally along the Catalina Island coastline) even more.
